Wicker Man Studios Press Release: Wicker Man Studios Launches Gun Street Girl on the iPhone App Store

Friday, April 17th, 2009

Wicker Man Studios is proud to announce the launch of a new website specifically for flagship title Gun Street Girl,, from which WMS is already offering its latest Gun Street Girl story, “The Jealous Dead,” on the iPhone App Store. “The Jealous Dead” will cost 99 cents to download (in the US and Canada–other stores may vary), and can easily be read on the iPhone and the iPod touch with Wicker Man Studios’ own brand-new application, a comics reader which will allow readers using these devices to easily read stories panel-by-panel, simply by touching the screen and dragging the panels from right to left; tapping the screen will show thumbnails of all panels in a story so that one can, for example, easily pick up where one left off during a previous interrupted session.

In addition to the brand-new, never-before-seen story “The Jealous Dead,” WMS also offers another GSG story, “Where It All Began,” for free on the iPhone App Store, for new readers to try out the Gun Street Girl experience free of charge, featuring the secret origin of GSG’s main characters, bodyguard Liz Pendragon and down-on-his-luck magician Eddie Caution. All one needs to do is visit the iPhone App Store and search under “applications” for Wicker Man Studios, and then download the stories– “Where It All Began” is free, and all others are 99 cents.

For those who do not own either of these devices, regular PDFs are also offered at the new GSG site of each respective story, to be purchased, in the case of “The Jealous Dead,” using a PayPal payment of 99 cents.

Gun Street Girl’s archives will still be mirrored at the main Wicker Man Studios site of

With a high concept that feels like La Femme Nikita meets Grosse Pointe Blank with a little dash of Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Gun Street Girl has won praise from a variety of reviewers, such as Curve Magazine: “Our current rave [for digital graphic novels] has to be Gun Street Girl . . . Sassy, smart, and socially subversive…”

When Gun Street Girl’s Eddie Caution, a heavyset magician and supernatural investigator, meets tough-girl Liz Pendragon while she’s getting herself in trouble defending her girlfriend from the roving hands of some relations of the local mob, he offers her a job as his bodyguard and muscle, and she accepts, having wanted all her life for there to be a way to encounter magic on a regular basis. The two of them investigate ghosts, rescue those kidnapped by monsters, try to stay out of trouble (often difficult), and generally enjoy life.

Barbara Lien-Cooper and Park Cooper, the creators of Gun Street Girl and owners of Wicker Man Studios, have a column on popular culture at the website Comics Bulletin, found at Barbara has written for many websites, and served a one-year stint as Managing Editor of the multiple-Eisner-award-winning print magazine Comic Book Artist. Park is the Editor-in-Chief of indie comics company Septagon Studios, and of the website MangaLife. Together, they also co-wrote the graphic novel Half Dead, published by Dabel Brothers Productions and Marvel Comics, and later picked up again by Desperado Publishing, and the New Media project The Hidden for manga publisher Tokyopop. They both also adapt manga and edit manga and comics for various companies.

Ryan Howe is the illustrator of Gun Street Girl, and the Art Director for Wicker Man Studios. He is also currently drawing the third of his three issues of the political comics project Female Force for BlueWater Productions. The previous two issues he drew both sold out and went to multiple printings.

The new application was created by Dale Zak, a mobile software developer living in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. His website can be found at:

Okay, this is it… it’s really happening. Or, rather, it’s all set to happen. The obstacle to what I have been waiting on just cleared, and now it’s time to get press releases, ads, interviews, and other stuff ready… and Ryan says he just finished the new ads yesterday…

Much as I’ve been putting off updating news here because of getting ready for Big New Thing, we’ve also been working on various stuff, clearing the decks to work on Life After The Big New Thing. So…

GSG artist Ryan Howe posted this nifty thing he drew of himself being interviewed by a local Canadian newspaper about the Female Force comics he’s drawn and is drawing:

Let’s see… over at MangaLife, Barb and I wrote a lot of stuff:

Here, I talk about Hunter x Hunter the anime:

Here, Barb talks about the MangaBible:

I have fun talking about dingoes in my review of Vertical’s Black Jack v3 and 4:

Barb is deeply moved by Viz’s Real v3 and 4:

Barb uses an excellent metaphor during her discussion of Slam Dunk v3:

Barb worked hard on this review of Gantz v2:

I get to talk even more about the intersection of manga and the spirit of the samurai warrior while discussing Hunter x Hunter v25:

I got a little punchy here:

Barb got inspired talkin’ about that there Death Note:

Oh yeah, and people just can’t stop being inspired by Naruto in my spotlight on volumes 34 through 40.

See what I mean? We’ve been clearing the decks, catching up on stuff, getting ready, battening down the hatches, battening them down again… That’s not even every single thing we’ve written for ML lately– it’s just the most entertaining stuff. Okay wait it might be every single thing Barb’s written lately, but same thing.

Now, other important news is that Wicker Man Studios members Steven G. Saunders and Fictio– I mean Josh Wagner are at the Emerald City con RIGHT NOW AS I WRITE THIS. I command you to HUNT THEM DOWN and BUY THEM AN APPROPRIATE AMOUNT OF DRINKS.

Wicker Man Studios (and Septagon Studios for that matter) ally Dave Baxter is also there. He doesn’t drink as much as the other two– he runs on solar. Or he’s some kind of hybrid or something, at least. Anyway, instead of buying him drinks (he helps keep an eye on Josh too, after all), ask him how to kill a grizzly.

Let’s see what else… here, look at this:

Look down there at number 216! Right above Civil War! It’s Nora, the Viz manga that Barb and I adapt! But consider that this is not a list of things ordered by BOOKSTORES– it’s a list of things ordered by COMIC BOOK STORES. Dude.

Oh, and look! There’s Kamichama Karin Chu, one of the Del Rey mangas I edit! #172, two slots above Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 8.

And, again, this is NOT a bookstores list. This is a COMIC BOOK SHOPS list.  Golly.

Okay that is all for now… off I go to prepare letters announcing Big New Thing… check back here in about… 12 days or so.

GSG Artist Ryan Howe illustrates BlueWater’s Female Force

Thursday, March 12th, 2009

GUN STREET GIRL artist and Wicker Man Studios Art Director RYAN HOWE has been doing three of the four FEMALE FORCE comics from BlueWater Productions; specifically, the upcoming one on Caroline Kennedy, and the two of Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin, each of which are both in stores now and have already gone to a second printing.

BlueWater’s site:

“On the heels of last weeks [sic] announcement about the FEMALE FORCE: SARAH PALIN comic selling out, Bluewater Productions is proud to announce that the Hillary Clinton issue has also now sold out and will be going back for a second printing.

“We are excited to be going to a 2nd printing on the Hillary Clinton title,” said Bluewater Productions publisher Darren G. Davis. “We thought when we overprinted these issues there would be enough for the demand. We had no clue how well these books would be received in the marketplace”.  Comic book stores that have ordered this title will have them on the release date of March 11.

The 2nd printing of the comic will feature the same painted cover of Hillary Clinton by Vinnie Tartamella. It will be available now to bookstores with a new ISBN: 978-1-4276-3886-1.”

America’s Secretary of State Hillary Clinton blogged about this here:

There is a page on Amazon for the Sarah Palin comic, although it doesn’t list as having released yet, since retailers are usually allowed a jump on these things before Amazon:

Here (starting at the 1 min 32 sec mark), The Rachel Maddow Show’s Kent Jones seeks, with some success, to impress the graphic-novel-loving Rachel Maddow with the comics, although he incorrectly identifies the publisher as being the same as published the Obama/McCain comics previously…
Also, a trade collection is coming out in July.

Saturday, March 7th, 2009

Well, first of all, I finished posting my con report… this is where the main course is:

Let’s see… over at MangaLife, Barb and I wrote some stuff:

I also bought some issues of Naruto because the guy from Viz who sends me review copies didn’t. Then the guy at Viz who sends me review copies sent them to me. So the moral of this story is: It is never a mistake to buy Naruto, no matter what happens.

I edited these things you can buy:

Okay that is all for now… very soon Ryan Howe will tell me it is time to report awesome new things. He thinks maybe Wednesday, so if you know him, and awesome new things do not happen yet Wednesday, email him and tell him he was wrong

Tuesday, February 17th, 2009

Well, first of all, I started posting my con report… didn’t get very far, but this is like ordering a large appetizer before your meal:

Let’s see… over at MangaLife, Barb wrote a thing:

Also WMS member Steven Saunders has a new info page about himself:

I wanna see him fit all that onto a business card like I keep trying to do for myself…

Oh yeah, and FYI Nora volume three must be about to come out, because they sent us our comp copies for adapting it… so watch for it…

Okay that is all for now because I am so tired. Many many things to report soon like as in “as soon as Ryan Howe tells me it is time to report them.”

Wicker Man Studios News, February 8th, 2009

Sunday, February 8th, 2009

Aiiieee. Or, in Japanese: Kyaaaa. So tired since I am only just this evening back from NYCC. And what a C it was. And yet, since all sorts of people are about to come see this site because I gave them my business cards, it’s time to make the donuts, by which I mean update the news.

So let’s see what’s up lately… Mangalife. I’ve finished interviewing Chynna Clugston, and Part Two, the conclusion is up at my column right now, as well as over at Mangalife, too.

Also, someone linked to the first part of the interview, and the discussion that broke out over the topic of sexism in comics was apparently so irritating that the discussion was removed and the thread locked. Yay!

I say “Yay!”, but I’m not being snide about “Yay locking threads!” I’m just Yay because the whole thing meant that some more people maybe went and read the interview. And, because it was mentioned in the comments, even more people became aware that there’s new Blue Monday out (maybe they became aware of it because they read the interview)… so yay Chynna!

Also, Stefan Blitz of Forces Of Geek pointed out that you can read some of Half Dead on our site! Also, you know, there’s like a couple of dozen Gun Street Girl Stories for free to read, too, I’m just saying.

But yay linkage! Also, I helped Stefan fix a Java thing. So, helpful, me! Yay!

In other news, WMS member Steven Saunders became the new PR Director for Chimaera Studios (, and one of two Marketing Coordinators with Studio 407 (

He also says this:

“Studio 407 is putting together a hardbound, prestige format anthology with the theme ‘Heroes and Superheroes.’ If you have a 5-25 page story you would like to submit, please contact Steve Saunders,, and let him know. Please note that stories are expected to be fully-written soon after pitching, with art soon following. The time the full story should be submitted is by late March of this year. If you have a cool story already written out and no artist, Steve can help you try to find one– but keep in mind that this would not be Studio 407 finding you an artist. For more details on the book, what’s planned and how everything will be handled, please drop Steve a line.”

That’s what the man said.

Okay that is all for now because I am so tired. Many many things to report soon.

Happy Inauguration Day. From the Latin, to practice augury. What do the entrails of the comics industry suggest for the new year?

That it’s time for a new news update, that’s what.

First, you’ll notice that I haven’t added any new items in the Writing section. I ran out of articles for Barb, and wasn’t sure what to do about it for a while. Barb has written more stuff, but not articles… You’ll be hearing more about this soon, but not quite yet.

I finally decided that, as much as I liked each of us updating at the same time, I’ll go onward with adding my articles to the site on my own… but not today… today is Inauguration Day, and I’m a little wound up, and can’t settle down and work on things like the meager html that Ryan’s taught me…

Next, Mangalife. I’ve interviewed Chynna Clugston, and my interview is up at my column right now, and I just put it over at Mangalife, too. Part One, that is. I’ll probably put the conclusion up before the end of the month…

And then Barb and I have done more stuff for MangaLife lately, like:

That’s my reviews of Osamu Tezuka’s BLACK JACK (v1 and v2), of the latest Hunter x Hunter, of the big collection of Dragon Ball Z… and Barb’s recent article “Manga Goes To Hollywood”…

Oh yeah, and the other day Septagon started running my latest Septagon Briefing that I do for them…

That’s the one.

Barb’s birthday is this Saturday if you want to write and wish her well… or send her Amazon gift cards…

An additional note: I plan to attend NYCC this year… anyone else going?

So anyway: NewGSGStoryAndExactlyHowItWillBecomeAvailableToYourComputingDevice-Watch: When I last updated you, Secret Facilitator Man told me that The Plan will once again start being Facilitated again Secretly as soon as he gets back into the office on Monday.

Well, The Plan is still not in place and I’ve stopped waiting on Secret Facilitator Man. Ryan Howe knows a guy who has the skill sets we need… yesterday, I was told that he’s already 90% done… we’re moving forward with, or more likely without, Secret Facilitator Man.

More on this news as it develops, but expect things to start happening faster…

New articles up in the writing section of this site…

First, in honor of my new bud Dave Baxter, I decided to run my San Diego Con report from 2006, it was a really good report, one of my personal favorites, plus it talks all about the long tail-ness that Dave talks a lot about these days…

Meanwhile, I posted barb’s “Manly Manga” article from over at MangaLife… she wrote it back in April, I think that ML’s had that baby as an exclusive for long enough now…

Still, I am starting to run out of Barb-only written things… that… won’t… get us in trouble for bringing back up again… but I have a solution… and you’ll be amazed by what it is… more on that later this month, I hope.

Hmm, let’s see… since I last posted here, WMS member Josh Wagner posted a blogthing that I thought was kinda interesting…

Oh yeah, and the new MangaLife is up… I wouldn’t bring this up, but this week it features some stuff from Barb and me, like my spotlight on Vertical, Inc’s BLACK JACK volumes 1 and 2, or the MangaLife RoundTable End-of-Year Wrap-Up, or Barb’s review of volume 2 of Dark Horse’s Ghost Talker’s Daydream…

Aw, just go there. If I may make a suggestion, try going there in Chrome, that seems to work super extra faster than the usual ways. If you take my meaning.

Oh, wait, it occurs to me also that since I was here last I also updated The Park and Barb Show:

It’s Christmas Newsletter time all over again, it’s Christmas in January whee.

So anyway: NewGSGStoryAndExactlyHowItWillBecomeAvailableToYourComputingDevice-Watch: As you know, I have been negotiating with Orcus from Orcusville to hunt down Secret Facilitator Man and ascertain when exactly the new story will go live. Orcus told me that he didn’t have time to find him, much as he’d like the finder’s fee, because he’s on the run from an insane lemur.

However, little did he know, that he did PASS Secret Facilitator Man on the street and didn’t recognize him, which spooked Secret Facilitator Man into getting in touch with me. Secret Facilitator Man said that The Plan will once again start being Facilitated again Secretly as soon as he gets back into the office on Monday.

Okay, fine. So we should have more news on this story by the next time I post here.

I’m just glad I didn’t have to pay Orcus.

More on this news as it develops. I will post all new information the second it becomes functional, so stay tuned for news of this next time, in the news posting we must surely call:

New articles up in the writing section of this site…

Two more Barb DVD reviews, namely THE HEIRESS and ARTHUR…

Meanwhile, I posted my Paul Dini interview. You may have seen him in the geek news lately as being a or the prime mover behind this new WONDER WOMAN cartoon I hear is coming…

Next up, another one of my SEPTAGON BRIEFING columns, which I write in my capacity as editor-in-chief of Septagon Studios, went up this week:

Also: WMS member Steven Saunders has a 5-page preview for that project of his, and Stephen Lindsay’s, and Dominic Vivona’s– THE SECRET CROSS. The 5 page short features guest artist Breno Tamura.

More about this here:

Also, like, the thing itself is there. Yeah.

So anyway: NewGSGStoryAndExactlyHowItWillBecomeAvailableToYourComputingDevice-Watch: I am negotiating with Orcus from Orcusville to hunt down Secret Facilitator Man and ascertain when exactly the new story will go live. More on this news as it develops. It should develop quickly– Orcus is currently having some cash flow problems.

And he knows that I know this. In fact, I KNOW that he knows that I know.

And he, in turn, is aware of that fact.

I will post all new information the second it becomes functional, so stay tuned for news of this next time, in the news posting we must call

New articles up in the writing section of this site…

I was going to do a couple more Barb DVD reviews, but after that I wanted to run a nice article Barb once wrote about Night of the Living Dead… and I’m sorry, the closer it gets to Christmas, the less I think zombies are appropriate. I know, I know, I’m probably WAY out of synch with everyone reading this…

But this bizarre policy on my part means you get zombies NOW! Yay for you! Barb DVD reviews will resume next week…

Meanwhile, I decided to go with my essay “Ballad of a Thin Man,” which is an essay I really like and yet it is so heavy on cultural references, you’d have to read all the same comics and movies and anime and stuff as me to get every single reference in it. For once, I don’t care, I did it anyway, and I really like it. So here it is, Dylanophiles.

I wrote one extra review this week at Mangalife…

There you go.

So anyway: NewGSGStoryAndExactlyHowItWillBecomeAvailableToYourComputingDevice-Watch: The new file was given to Secret Facilitator Man today. When I see him tomorrow, as I expect that I shall, I shall ask Secret Facilitator Man about an ETA on when, exactly, NewGSGStoryAndExactlyHowItWillBecomeAvailableToYourComputingDevice-Watch might end…

I will post this information the second it becomes functional, so stay tuned for news of this next time, in the news posting we must call
